Understanding Your Brain Differently
ADHD & Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy in Colorado
A different brain may need a different path.
At Illuminate Play Therapy & Counseling, we understand that ADHD and neurodivergence can affect far more than attention. They can shape emotions, executive functioning, sensory experiences, relationships, school or work, self-esteem, and the way you move through everyday life.
Our neurodivergent-affirming approach focuses on understanding how your individual brain works, recognizing both strengths and challenges, and developing strategies that fit you—rather than expecting you to fit into systems that may never have worked well in the first place.
Our Neurodivergent-Affirming Approach
Neurodivergence isn't something that needs to be fixed. At Illuminate, we approach ADHD, autism, sensory differences, executive functioning challenges, and other neurodivergent experiences with curiosity, compassion, and respect for the individual.
Rather than asking, “How do we make you function more like everyone else?” we explore how your brain and nervous system work, what makes life harder, what helps, and how to build strategies that actually fit you.
Therapy may incorporate conversation, movement, sensory experiences, play, creativity, somatic and nervous-system approaches, executive functioning support, and practical strategies depending on your age, needs, and goals. Our clinicians adapt the therapeutic process rather than expecting every person to engage, communicate, or heal in the same way.
How Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy Can Help
ADHD and other neurodivergent experiences can affect many parts of everyday life—from emotions, relationships, and sensory experiences to motivation, organization, school, work, and self-esteem. Therapy can provide a space to better understand these patterns without shame while developing strategies that honor the way your brain actually works.
Our clinicians support children, teens, adults, and families in building greater self-understanding, regulation, confidence, and connection while navigating the challenges that can come with living in environments that aren't always designed with neurodivergent brains in mind.
Therapy may support challenges related to:
ADHD and executive functioning
Autism and neurodivergent experiences
Emotional regulation and overwhelm
Sensory needs and sensory overload
Task initiation, motivation, and transitions
Organization, routines, and time awareness
Anxiety and stress
Masking and burnout
Self-esteem and identity
Relationships and communication
School or workplace challenges
Parenting a neurodivergent child
What to Expect During Therapy
Therapy begins with understanding you—not just a diagnosis or list of symptoms. Your therapist will spend time learning about your experiences, strengths, challenges, sensory needs, relationships, environment, and what you hope will feel different in everyday life.
Because neurodivergent brains don't all experience or process the world in the same way, therapy may look different from person to person. Sessions may include conversation, movement, sensory experiences, play, creativity, executive-functioning support, nervous-system work, practical strategies, or a combination of approaches based on your needs and goals.
You won't be expected to sit still, make eye contact, communicate in a particular way, or approach therapy exactly like someone else. We believe the therapeutic environment should adapt to the person—not the person to the therapy.
The goal isn't to change who you are. It's to help you understand yourself more deeply, reduce unnecessary struggle, and find ways of navigating life that work better for your brain and nervous system.
Find Support That Fits the Way You Think, Feel & Experience the World
Reaching out for therapy can feel especially difficult when you've spent years feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed, or like traditional approaches haven't quite fit. At Illuminate, you don't have to fit yourself into one way of doing therapy.
Our clinicians bring different specialties and approaches to working with ADHD and neurodivergent children, teens, adults, and families. Explore our therapists to find the clinician whose experience, approach, location, and payment options feel like the best fit for you.
