Meet KJ Leuallen
Creative, relationship-centered support for teens

What is sandtray therapy?

Sandtray uses a tray of sand and miniature objects as an expressive tool. A teen may create a scene, choose objects or explore themes that connect with their experiences. The focus is on personal meaning, rather than making something artistic or getting an answer right.

This offers a different starting point when talking alone feels difficult. KJ can help the teen reflect, make connections and explore coping strategies at a pace that respects their readiness.

Emotions & regulation

Explore big feelings, stress and ways to feel more grounded when experiences become overwhelming.

Relationships & identity

Make space for peer and family relationships, belonging, boundaries and the process of understanding yourself.

Difficult experiences

Build a supportive relationship while exploring trauma, grief, transitions and concerns that may be hard to describe.

What a session can look like

KJ starts by building trust and understanding the teen's goals. Sessions may include conversation, sandtray, reflection and other experiential activities. There is no requirement to use sandtray every time, and no artistic ability is needed.

Teens have room to ask questions, share preferences and participate in choosing approaches that feel useful. Care is tailored to the individual rather than a fixed activity plan.

For parents & caregivers

Your perspective matters. During the consultation, discuss your teen's needs, current concerns and hopes for counseling. KJ can explain caregiver involvement, consent, confidentiality and how updates or collaboration may work within applicable requirements.

Ask about how to support your teen between sessions while respecting the therapeutic relationship.

Insurance & office location

KJ accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicaid, subject to individual verification. Confirm your teen's specific coverage, eligibility and costs before services begin.

Common questions

Is sandtray only for young children?

No. Sandtray can be adapted for adolescents and adults. With teens, it can offer an expressive alternative to relying entirely on direct conversation.

What if my teen doesn't want to talk or use sandtray?

Let KJ know during the consultation. Building comfort and exploring preferences are part of the process. Fit and readiness can be discussed before deciding on next steps.

Can a school counselor or therapist refer a teen?

Yes. Families can request a consultation directly with KJ. Referral partners may share this page and coordinate with the family. Any collaboration or exchange of clinical information requires appropriate authorization.
